Sarah'Louise Muldowney - Personal Statement.

Anyone who has taken a look behind the scenes of a theatre knows that the real action does not take place on stage. Studying costume design not only requires a grasp of the big concept that is theatre, but also ambition, creativity and utter commitment. I am very much aware of the challenges involved in pursuing a career in theatre, but my experience in this field during the last   seven years has shown me that these are qualities that I possess. My ultimate ambition is to be a costume designer, but the whole process of creating a production inspires me, from the initial decision for a play right up until the last curtain fall. The diversity involved in costume design /theatre is both challenging and exciting, interacting with the director and the team, with art, creativity and “hands on” work to create a perfect production.
Having always been fascinated with clothes, fashion, art and costume I regularly took part in my school’s theatre and musical productions as part of the wardrobe team. In 2008 I studied B Tec Fashion and Clothing at Craven College Skipton. During this time I learned a lot about concept and construction of clothes and more importantly was involved in the process of taking a project from the initial idea to the finished product.
I have worked for Thornton’s the Chocolatiers and also have bar work and marketing experience which has heightened my tolerance as well as my capability to perform as part of a team and be considerate to the needs of others. During my school days I became involved with the Pendle Hippodrome Theatre Colne Lancashire where I took on the roll of assistant wardrobe mistress working on various musicals and plays. My roll involved dressmaking, fitting costumes, wigs and hiring costumes when necessary.  My theatre experience gained me work in the wardrobe department on `Ghost the musical’ working for the Ambassador Theatre Group at Manchester Opera House 2011. My job included dressing, garment construction and alterations as needed.
In 2012 I worked on `Street of Dreams’ at the M.E.N arena with the wardrobe team fitting costumes and alterations. The production had to be ready in a short space of time and the staff had to work under an enormous amount of pressure to meet the deadline.
I am confident that my dedication as well as my academical and personal background will enable me to make the most of what I am certain will be a fantastic opportunity.
